Bowen as subject of my Master’s Thesis

December 13, 2009 at 7:58 pm (Thesis)

Elizabeth said that in writing “shape is possibly the important thing”. She is a writer whose atmospheric descriptions of place, other-worldly perceptions, hyperaesthetic responses to shifts of mood, ligt, pace, mass make one characterise her as an impressionist. And yet there is this inexorability with which she brings her characters towards their fate; and her endings are seldom ambiguous – in the novels, as opposed to the stories, they are often unequivocally violent.
